KNOW YOUR PAN NO. / VERIFICATION OF PAN NO. BY NAME

Income-tax Department of Govt. of India has given facility to verify / know  the PAN (Permanent Account Number) of any person including himself on it’s website www. incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and verification can also be made by clicking on ‘Know Your PAN (ITD)’ on www.pancard.org.in .

The Searching / verifying person will have to fill minimum ‘Date Birth’ and Surname / Last Name of the person whose PAN No. is being searched. For perfect result in single shot, searching person may/should also fill Fist Name and Middle Name but if such persons are in multiple (More than one), then searching person shall have to fill further more information on next page such as his ‘Father’s First Name’, ‘Father’s Surname (Last Name)’ compulsorily and father’s middle name additionally. After filling all these data / details PAN Number, Complete Name and Assessing Officer of that person will come / reflect on screen.

Problem : Problem arises in case of multiple (More than one) PAN holders with identical name and father’s name has only ‘Last Name’ as ‘Full Name’ and there is no ‘First Name’ of the father. In that case, this search / verification can not be completed with results. This is serious mistake in the Govt. website which requires immediate correction by removing compulsion of ‘first name of father’.

WHAT IS PAN CARD ?

What is PAN card : Full form of ‘PAN Card is Permanent Account Number Card which is issued by Income-tax Department of Govt. Of India. The words ‘Pancard‘ or ‘Pan Card‘ are neither defined in the Income-tax Act, 1961 nor are in the existence in complete Income-tax Act, 1961 but the words ‘Permanent Account Number‘ have only referred in the Income-tax Act, 1961 which is known as PAN in short and as per provisions of I.T.Act, 1961, each income-tax assessee and/or income-tax return filers and/or some persons who are required to get allotted PAN compulsorily as per various provisions of I.T.Act,1961 are required to have PAN (Permanent Account No.) allotted from the Income-tax Department of Govt. Of India.

Now, question arises what is the ‘Pan Card’ ? In fact, Pan Card is some sort of a Certificate of Permanent Account Number printed on Plastic Card and such printed plastic card is known as ‘PAN CARD‘. Presently, apart from Income-tax Department, it is the best Personal Identification Certificate almost in all spheres in India. ‘Pan Card’ is so valuable and well recognised that the Letter certifying the allotment of PAN (which is actual certificate even with complete address but without photo) has no value but PAN Card (even without address) has all values as a valuable certificate or Identification proof.

In other words, PAN CARD size is of standard plastic bank-card in Blue Color. It bears front-face Photo of the holder, Date of birthDate of issue and a hologram sticker as security feature in addition to the Name and Father’s or Mother’s Name of the Pan Card Holder. The card does not bear address of the holder. However, the accompanying PAN allotment-cum-despatch  letter, bears the address of the holder. The PAN number and the letter together may be accepted as address proof.Minors PAN cards issued through UTI and NSDL do not bear photo nor the date of issue. Pan Card of  HUF, Partnership Firm, LLP, Company, Trusts / AOP also does not bear photo of applicant.

A person can not have more than one PAN (Permanent Account No) but there is no restriction to have more than one Pancard and therefore, if one applies for Reprint of Pancard, that person gets Second Original Pancard without marking ‘Duplicate’ with same number and therefore, now-a-days, it has become fashion to have two or more Pancards and at least, each Black & White Pancards are being replaced by Colored Second Original Pancard.

Older PAN cards issued before the year 2001 were black & white print on laminated plain paper with almost unrecognizable photograph. Those cards are still valid. People can apply for new plastic card by application for Reprint of Pan Card  (same PAN number) and Pan Card holders are advised that Black & White Pan Cards should be replaced by present Colored  Plastic Pan Card earliest as possible as the life of  Black & White Pan Cards is very limited and such Pan Card holders can keep both the pan Cards at a time – Author : Karishma Moondra for www.etdsdsc.com and www.pancard.org.in .

Every Indian citizen including Senior Citizens, Rural Persons and illiterate persons can apply for Pan Card in India.
